Why is everyone adding COVID-19 tests to their packing lists?

The resurgence of COVID-19 due to the Delta variant has shifted the already inconsistent and confusing traveling requirements. One traveler going to Portugal packed 8 at-home COVID tests so he could feel prepared and spend less time booking appointments & being at testing locations - and more time enjoying his vacation. You may be thinking, eight tests!? Well here's why. Across all of Portugal, accommodations and indoor dining (at certain locations and peak times) must check for one of the following before check-in:

Within 72 hours of check-in: negative PCR test

Within 48 hours of check-in: rapid antigen test with lab report

Within 24 hours of check-in: rapid antigen test in the presence of a health professional (or via Telehealth)

No time requirement: rapid antigen self-test carried out at the door of the establishment with supervision from the person in charge of the premises

If you plan to dine indoors or stay in multiple accommodations abroad, it would be wise to add at-home tests to your packing list! Enjoy the freedom and spontaneity of travel again.
