Scientists at the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory are working hard to find and study Covid-19 antibodies, which are made by humans who have recovered from the virus. Argonne biologist Andrezej Joachnimiak is specifically focusing on determining the physical shape and structure of the proteins that make up the coronavirus. UChicago immunologist Patrick Wilson specializes in studying B cells, “the white blood cells that contain the master recipe for making antibodies.” Together Joachnimiak and Wilson are racing to determine which antibodies are the most effective against the virus, which could be fundamental in creating vaccines and treatments in the future.
